This Is the tracking page of Honghao's machine designing and building process
The machine he wants to build should have small overall package but huge, potentially unlimited, builing size on x, y and z axis. This machine's operation should not be limited by its building platform, which means ideally the end factor should avoid direct contact with the cutting material, i.e. using laser. Following is his process so far:

Why shaper++? Above video shows shows how Honghao is trying to cut a square shape on the bottom of his no-brand laser cutter. It took him 2 hours. Current Fab machines have a white space when operating on ready-made objects that have awkward x, y, z length. In fact, the sole reason he cut his laser cutter open is because he want to cut several square holes on a 350mm deep acrylic box, and there is no machines around the campus he can get access to that has that deep z axis (Universal System Ultra has only 305mm capacity on z direction.)

 

While you may say Shaper tools already solve the problem, they only figure out x and ys. The mechanism requires large stock size on x and ys for stability because of the hard connection of the spinning tool head and the stock. And they become quite unhandy when cutting object with irregular shapes. Therefore I propose a handheld lasercutter, which use galvanometer to redirect beam on stock surface to generate cut shape on a small area and cancel the trembling from moving the tool by hand.
